Women in Contact Sports
In class we discussed if women should be allowed to play football alongside men. There have been a few instances where females have played football. In college I can think of a kicker for Colorado, but she didn’t play that much. When it comes to being a kicker, there is little actual contact involved. Another example is Holly Mangold, who was a lineman in high school. She actually is a professional weightlifter now. Neither one of these women were able to play football at the highest level.
It just makes sense to me that women should be allowed to do what they want, and should be allowed to play any contact sport if they decide to. Saying this I don’t see a women breaking through and being able to play at a high level in college and contribute. The reason I say this is males are traditionally bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic. I just couldn’t see a women running down a top athlete and tackling them. I also couldn’t see a woman catching the ball and get hit over and over by larger men. I feel they should be allowed to compete, I just don’t ever see one being a top player at the high school level let alone college, or the pros. Women’s bodies aren’t built like men’s and just can’t handle the intensity of contact sports with men.

Besides the differences in how men and women are built, I think you also have to take into consideration how women have been socialized. That typically means that little girls are not encouraged to play contact sports like football. I wonder if things might be different if our socialization were more like males?
ReplyDeleteI agree the women should be able to play what ever sport they want, if they decide to. I also understand your point of view when saying that you can't see a women tackling a male player. It's just a biological thing that makes women different from men.
ReplyDeleteI agree that women should be able to play contact sports. It seems like the right thing to do for football, since there is no replacement sport. For example, if a girl wants to play baseball, she can play softball, hockey, they can play field hockey, and so on. Because there is no sport women can play instead of football, they should be allowed to play. I just really hope that no woman gets hurt too badly playing, and it will cause tons of controversy.
